Our class play is coming up next week, so a lot of our L.A. time is going to be spent rehearsing. We won’t be having a story or vocabulary for the next two weeks.

We officially start Term 4 this week!  I can’t believe the year is three-fourths over.  Also remember, Spring Break next week.

L.A.: We will be starting a story this week on Harriet Tubman. The words are listed below. We will be doing a Vocabulary Practice with a focus on inexplicable, legitimate, destination, motioned and retorted. Our vocabulary strategies this week will be the prefixes con-, com-, pre-, and pro-. Our grammar concepts for this week is are types of ending punctuation and proper nouns and adjectives. We will also begin a new Spelling List this week, though with the craziness of everything going on with the elementary musical and all, we might not test on it until the following week. Our practice pages will include Reader’s Notebook pages 327-330 and Reader’s Notebook pages 343-345.

Science: Toward the end of last week we started creating posters on the 6 Characteristics of all living things.  We will be finishing and sharing those posters this week.  We will then move into the 6 Basic Needs of All Living Things, and what the word competition means in the animal world.  We will also take be taking our first quiz of this unit.

L.A. – We’re going to continue with our excerpt from Number the Stars. This week, we will have the Comprehension Questions. We will also start a new Spelling List this week. Spelling Practice will be Reader’s Notebook pages 316-318. Our grammar lesson this week is Comparing with Adjectives and Adverbs. The practice pages will be Reader’s Notebook pages 331-333.

Science: We will be starting our fourth and final science unit this week, Microorganisms!  We’re on to the final stretch!

Side note: This will be the last week for third term math and language arts assignments.  With the change in unit, anything we do in science starting this week, I am going to put onto fourth term science.  It seems best to use the natural break in units for that.

L.A. – We will be starting a new story this week. It’s an excerpt from Number the Stars.  The vocabulary words are pictured below, with an emphasis on occupying, subsided, scornfully, warily, and strident.  The concept we will be reviewing is using context clues to determine the meaning of a word. Being a short week, we will not be starting a new spelling list, but we will be testing on last week’s Lists. We will read the story once this week, saving the comprehension questions and testing for next week.

Here’s another study guide that I had created for a different year, but couldn’t find until after we started reviewing.  I’ll make it available for use as well.

L.A. – First off, end of level writing test is done!!!! And I have to say, I am quite proud of how much effort these kids put into their work.  I tell them going into these tests that as long as they can walk away from it saying they did their absolute best, I don’t care what their scores are (which is mostly true… obviously I care about the scores, but the effort is more important to me). I truly feel like these kids gave me their best, and that is all I can ask.

We will be continuing “First to Fly” this week.  We didn’t have a chance last week to get to the Comprehension Assignment, so we will be hitting it this week.  We will also take our first Vocab and Comprehension quizzes for while (Yay again for the writing test being done!) Our grammar this week is on quotations.  With that, and spelling practice (Spelling List) we will be doing Reader’s Notebook pages 304-309.

Science: Science Fair (Phase 1) is done!  We will be announcing on Monday who will be moving onto the next round with the school science fair. I have to say, I’m very impressed with this year’s projects.  Job well done everyone!

This week, we will be finishing up our sound unit and will begin reviewing for the big Energy (Heat, Light, Sound) Unit Test which will happen sometime on March 4-6.
