JAZZ READING CONTEST!

It’s that time of year again!  Time for our annual Jazz Reading Contest!  This is always an exciting time of year as we have teachers and students challenging each other.  There are lots of prizes and rewards the students can earn or win.  Let’s start with what the school is offering:

  • Top ten schools in the contest get a visit from a Jazz player and Russell’s Ice Cream.
  • Top 11-20 schools will win an autographed Jazz Basketball.
  • Free Dress Day, movie day and treat if we reach our goal (One million something… I don’t remember the exact number)
  • Highest reading grades gets an additional free dress day.
  • Top reader in the school wins a Kindle.
  • Jazz Tickets (second highest reader or drawing)
  • Autographed books (Books are autographed by Jazz player Derrick Favors. These will be awarded through a drawing for readers with at least 1500 minutes)
  • Weekly book drawings for readers who turn in their minutes on time. (I do collect my minutes a little differently, but this drawing will be at the start of each week)
  • For every 350 minutes you read, you get to guess how many worms are in the Bookworm Jar. Closest guess wins the jar.

Now, for some it stops there.  But not for Mr. Pratt… Here’s some prizes for just our classroom:

  • Top three readers get choice in order of classroom prizes.
  • Stickers, tickets and other rewards for turning minutes in on time.
  • Weekly winners will receive a prize from the class prize box.
  • If we beat Mrs. Lawrence’s class, Mrs. Lawrence has to do what our class has deemed as the “Table of Terror”.  Flip side to that, if Mrs. Lawrence’s class wins, Mr. Pratt has to have a Barbie day.  If both classes read more than 100,000 minutes, they’ll both do them regardless.

I have offered my classroom for a quiet reading space every morning starting at 7:00 if students are interested.  Let’s just say it’s been several years since my class wasn’t the top reading class in our grade at least.  Let’s keep it going this year!  Read, read, read!  If for whatever reason your student needs a new copy of the reading calendar, you can print it here.

Jazz Reading Calendar

A few basic rules:

  • Only out of school reading minutes count.
  • Students can read in groups and count all of the minutes for every student.
  • Older siblings can read to younger siblings and the minutes will count.
  • Types of reading that are not acceptable: internet, recorded books, playaways, cereal boxes, traffic signs, movie subtitles, storytellers, etc.
