Martin Luther King Jr.

mlkThis is one of my favorite “holidays” of the year, mostly because he was such a great person to celebrate.  I think it holds close to my fight against bullying, but the idea that we should all just respect each other for who we are is an ideal that I hold dear to heart.

As a way to commemorate Dr. King, each year I give his “I Have a Dream” speech to the students.  The biggest thing I ask for them is to truly think about the words.  He was specifically fighting for equal rights for black, but if you really listen to the speech, his message was equal rights for all, regardless of skin color, religion, size, shape hair color… it shouldn’t matter.

I don’t have any kids of my own yet, but I still always choke up a bit when I get to the line, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”  This is one message that I hope the students leave my class with.

Unfortunately, for some reason this year’s video did not take when I transferred it to the computer. If you are are interested in seeing a version of it, I do have video from previous years on my old blog.  Here’s a link to them:
