Students are often fed the myth that some people just aren’t any good at math. They expect math answers to be automatic, quick answers and when they are not- students (and parents) become discouraged. Some people give up, but remember that Albert Einstein struggled with basic arithmetic, and Benjamin Franklin once failed arithmetic.
Math has its own language and its own set of symbols for students to learn and it can be difficult, but all students can learn math. One of the links on this blog is to Reflex Math. This is a math fact fluency program that SAA has invested in so that all students can become more proficient at basic math facts. Your student has been given a user name and password that they can use at home and at school to practice. It is a fun program, much more fun than drill worksheets! Encourage kids to play and earn points for their avatar!
