8th grade

Students today played Rockin’ Connect Four as a review of rocks and the rock cycle.  We corrected it in class and turned it in.

There will be a test on Thursday on rocks and minerals.  Tomorrow we will be reviewing for the test!

8th Grade

Metamorphic rocks

Greek  Meta-change Morphos-shape

M.R. rock whose structure, texture or composition have change

can be changed by heat and or pressure or both

depth 2 km

texture- foliated- minerals are arrange themselves in bands or planes ( striped)

non-foliated – minerals are not arranged in bands

recrystalization-change in size or mineral

contact metamorphism- occurs near igneous intrusion

1. magma moves thru the crust the magma shears surrounding rock and changes it.

2. some minerals are changed into other minerals

3. Greatest- change takes place where magma comes in direct contact with the rock

Regional Metamorphism- large area

1. pressure builds up below other rock formations

2. large pieces of Earths crust collide with each other

minerals change into a new minerals carbon/graphite turns into diamond.

7th Grade

For Monday:

Reading stations on adaptions of different species of animals, 8 total. Please come during advisory to make up work.

Today we talked about graphing results for Science Fair projects. We started our project on  mimicry and camouflage.

Igneous Rock-Today’s Notes

Igneous- Latin for Fire

Form ?- Forms when magma-hot, liquid rock cools and solidifies.

Cools-Cools like water freezing complex mixture – different melting points.

7th Grade

1.Finish Close Reading from yesterday about Reindeer adaptations. If you were absent yesterday please come to class to get a copy of magazine. All paragraphs in article need a sticky note with key points and summary, due today.

2. Power point Adaptations of Reindeer to their environments guided notes 1-7 need to be filled out.

8th Grade

1.Rock Cycle picture due Friday.

2.Notes Rock Cycle

Rock- Solid mixture, naturally occurring of more than 1 minerals and organic matter.

Process of rock forming- Rock Cycle: New rock forms from old rock. Recycling

Value of Rock- Humans used rock for tools building

Pyramids-limestone

Granite-building/counter tops

Geological process- weathering-water, wind, ice or heat break down a rock

Erosion-sediment moved from its source water, wind, gravity ice.

Deposition-sediments are deposited putting the sediments somewhere

Heat and Pressure- sedimentary rocks can go thru heat and pressure turn into a metamorphic rock

Uplift and rock cycle-many pathways for a rock to follow.

Rocks divided into 3 groups: Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic

Texture-Size, shape and position of the grains that make up a rock- fine grained, medium grained

Composition-minerals a rock contains.

3. Answer questions page 35, 1-10.

8th grade -Feb. 3

Today students took a quiz and mined for “ore”.  There is a worksheet along with this activity but we will be finishing it tomorrow in class.

7th grade February 3

Today students are learning about the structure of DNA.  There was an in class lecture along with notes about this.

8th grade-Jan 31

On Friday we went over the answers to the Determining a Mineral Lab.  This was handed in as an assignment.
