Metamorphic rocks
Greek Meta-change Morphos-shape
M.R. rock whose structure, texture or composition have change
can be changed by heat and or pressure or both
depth 2 km
texture- foliated- minerals are arrange themselves in bands or planes ( striped)
non-foliated – minerals are not arranged in bands
recrystalization-change in size or mineral
contact metamorphism- occurs near igneous intrusion
1. magma moves thru the crust the magma shears surrounding rock and changes it.
2. some minerals are changed into other minerals
3. Greatest- change takes place where magma comes in direct contact with the rock
Regional Metamorphism- large area
1. pressure builds up below other rock formations
2. large pieces of Earths crust collide with each other
minerals change into a new minerals carbon/graphite turns into diamond.
